If you’re like me, you look forward to a cup of coffee every morning, and you know its magic. Coffee wakes you up and is the driving force behind waking up early.
And in the evening, a glass of red or white wine can bring a moment of peace to the day—whether it’s alone on the patio or enjoying a cozy evening with your loved ones. However, these delightful beverages can also quietly take a toll on the beauty of our teeth.
Many people are beginning to notice their once-white teeth becoming dull or even yellow. Does this mean we should give up our beloved coffee and wine? Not necessarily.
We asked Dr. Anjali Rajpal, a board-certified dentist in Beverly Hills, for her expert advice on how to enjoy fine wine and coffee while protecting your smile from staining.
Why do coffee and wine stain teeth?
The staining process is driven by the combined effects of chromogens, tannins, and acidity. Rajpal explains that these drinks contain dark pigments that adhere to tooth enamel.
Tannic acid, in particular, enhances the adhesion of these pigments, while acidity softens tooth enamel, making it easier for pigments to penetrate the tooth surface.
Dark roasts of coffee and espresso are more likely to stain than light roasts. Similarly, dark red wines (such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec) are more likely to stain than white wines. The longer a drink sits in the mouth, the higher the risk of staining.
Further factors can exacerbate staining: the temperature of the drink and how it is consumed.
Besides the type of drink, temperature can also affect teeth. Hot drinks tend to expand tooth enamel, increasing porosity and making it easier for pigments to penetrate.
Chilled drinks, on the other hand, are consumed more quickly, resulting in less contact between the liquid and teeth, making them less susceptible to staining. However, the most important factor is how often and how you drink.
Don’t give up your favorite drinks; these dentist recommendations can help you keep your teeth white
Drinking with a straw:
Using a straw, especially with chilled drinks, helps the liquid bypass the front teeth, reducing direct contact and the risk of staining.
Drink quickly, don’t sip all day:
Rajpal recommends consuming coffee or wine within 15–30 minutes and rinsing your mouth with water immediately. “Drinking it slowly over several hours creates a constant opportunity for discoloration to build up on your teeth.”
Rinse your mouth after drinking, delay brushing:
It’s not advisable to brush your teeth immediately after drinking coffee or wine. Because tooth enamel temporarily softens in an acidic environment, brushing immediately can damage the tooth surface. It’s recommended to wait at least 30 minutes before brushing.
Eat “tooth-friendly” foods
Certain foods can help neutralize acidity and reduce discoloration. For example:
Apples, carrots, and celery: Cleanse the teeth and stimulate saliva production.
Cheese and leafy greens: Provide a protective coating on the teeth.
Strawberries: Contain natural malic acid, which can help slightly whiten the teeth.
Use a toothpaste recommended by your dentist
Toothpastes with remineralizing and gentle ingredients can strengthen tooth enamel protection, reduce tooth sensitivity, and help maintain whiteness.
What if teeth are already discolored?
A professional teeth cleaning is the first step:
Rajpal recommends that before whitening your teeth, you first get a dental cleaning to remove surface plaque and stains. For deeper stains, consider in-office whitening or a custom tray treatment.
Home whitening products can also help:
Whitening strips or toothpaste: Contain peroxide, which breaks down surface stains. However, long-term use may increase tooth sensitivity.
LED whitening kits: Combine light and whitening gel for faster and more effective whitening. Ideal for those seeking fast results.
Coffee and wine are undoubtedly life’s little pleasures, and there’s no need to give them up completely because of concerns about staining. With some simple yet effective habits, you can enjoy delicious drinks while maintaining a bright, healthy smile. The key is to consume wisely and care for your teeth wisely, so you can smile confidently every day without worrying about staining.
