Community Dental Services Restore Health and Hope for Amarillo Man Through Trust

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) — Months of coordinated community support and donated dental care have helped one Amarillo man restore his health and move toward a more stable future.

Jamie McKinney received extensive dental treatment through DDS Family Dentistry after an evaluation showed many of his teeth could not be saved. Dr. Eric Crawford developed a long-term plan that included full upper and lower dentures, rather than a single procedure.

“We diagnosed Jamie and found several non-restorable teeth,” Crawford said. “The plan was to move slowly, build trust, and eventually complete the extractions needed for dentures.”

Over time, 23 teeth were removed as McKinney became more comfortable with the process. The care was provided at no cost.

The trust extended beyond the dental office. McKinney is part of Bridging the Gaps, a nonprofit that helps people experiencing homelessness regain stability through work and accountability. He has spent months trimming trees, cleaning properties, and contributing to community projects, including work for the dental practice.

“We’re given one body, and we need to take care of it,” Crawford said.

Shane Jones, vice president and treasurer of Bridging the Gaps, said McKinney earned the opportunity through consistent effort.

“He came to us from the streets and worked his way through the program,” Jones said. “He’s been working with me for over six months. He’s earned every bit of this.”

The impact is already visible. Jones noted McKinney’s improved health, weight gain, and renewed confidence.

For McKinney, the experience has been life-changing.

“Thanks to Dr. Crawford for helping me get my life back,” he said. “I appreciate everyone who believed in me.”

What began as routine community work evolved into a partnership that highlights how sustained relationships and access to dental services can create lasting change.
