ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Public Schools has launched a new direct dental service at The QUAD, aimed at improving students’ access to care and overall oral health.
The on-site dental clinic, founded by Dr. H. Cyrus Oates, provides free services to eligible students, including X-rays, cleanings and fillings. The facility fills a long-standing gap in dental access for families who face barriers related to transportation and cost.
“This clinic is truly unique,” said Dr. Oates, chairman, founder and lead dentist. “The space was sitting empty, and we were looking for a home for a dental clinic. Now, it’s making a real difference.”
To remove logistical challenges, district employees transport students from their schools to dental appointments and return them afterward, allowing students to receive care without missing a full day of classes.
Dr. Oates said the clinic directly addresses one of the biggest challenges in dentistry: access. “Affordability and having a place to go are major issues,” he said. “Knowing this facility is life-changing for some students is incredibly rewarding.”
John Cusimano, principal of The QUAD, noted that dental issues are the second leading cause of student absences in the district. He said the clinic supports more than just physical health.
“This service helps students with self-esteem, confidence and school attendance,” Cusimano said. “It also gives them a positive experience that can prepare them for future success.”
While the clinic has ample space to expand, Dr. Oates said additional dental professionals are needed to meet demand. He is seeking at least one full-time dentist, as well as part-time dentists who can volunteer one or two days per week.
“We have the facility,” Dr. Oates said. “Now we need more doctors to help us serve these students.”
