Rising Demand for Dental Implants as UK Patients Face Access Challenges

Recent data shows that approximately 5.6 million people in the UK currently struggle to get dental appointments, causing many to put off necessary care. While daily routines often put dental checkups low on the priority list, experts warn that delaying appointments can have serious consequences, including tooth loss.

Dr. Gülay Akay, founder of Dentakay, with clinics in London and Turkey, emphasizes the importance of prioritizing dental health for middle-aged patients. “Many patients postpone routine checkups, often ignoring early warning signs until they lose their teeth,” she explains. “Unfortunately, the ongoing pandemic has made it increasingly difficult for patients in the UK to access NHS dental care.”

Dentakay reports that over half of its clients seek treatment for tooth loss. Tooth loss is particularly concerning for adults in their 20s, although it often begins in their 40s and 50s. By age 50, approximately 25% of adults will have lost at least one permanent tooth, rising to 70% by age 60.

Dr. Akay highlights the main causes of tooth loss in middle-aged patients: severe gum disease, failed restorations like crowns and fillings, unsuccessful root canal treatments, and infection. She also noted that bruxism is a significant contributor to tooth loss. If jawbone health is compromised, teeth gradually become loose and eventually fall out within 10 to 15 years.

“Once tooth loss occurs, dental implants are the most reliable long-term solution,” Dr. Akay said. She noted that modern implant technology has advanced significantly. Digital technology now allows for precise calculation of implant length and placement, minimizing surgical trauma while improving patient comfort and accuracy.

Dentakay also uses digital impressions to capture detailed arch shapes for laboratory fabrication. This ensures highly accurate restorations and enables some patients to receive temporary crowns on the same day of surgery.

The patient’s treatment journey begins at Dentakay’s London clinic, where a dedicated medical consultant reviews X-rays and develops a treatment plan. Once approved, the patient travels to the Istanbul clinic for expedited treatment. Implants are placed on the first day, temporary dentures are installed within one to three days, and the patient leaves with a refreshed smile.

The London clinic coordinates every step, from consultation and travel arrangements to treatment planning, ensuring a seamless patient experience.

Due to limited accessibility and long NHS waiting times, we encourage patients to act now. Book your dental appointment – your smile will thank you.
