Esthetic Varnish Offers Tasty Flavors, Less Sensitivity

Adding to its popular Spearmint flavor, FluoroCal is now available in two more patient-friendly flavors that encourage compliance and provide immediate hypersensitivity relief

“Dentistry” and “pleasant” are 2 words that seldom find themselves in the same sentence, yet in recent years the industry has offered a host of innovations designed to help make patients’ dental visits more enjoyable. Whether it’s new technologies or leading-edge equipment and materials, patients are now greeted with additions to their appointments that not only make their dental treatments more effective, but also contribute to increased patient comfort.

Leading the charge is BISCO’s FluoroCal, a 5% sodium fluoride- and calcium-releasing* varnish. FluoroCal delivers a targeted and sustained release of calcium and fluoride for over 24 hours.³ Sweetened with xylitol for improved patient compliance and originally available in a refreshing Spearmint flavor, clinicians can now offer their patients FluoroCal in 2 new flavors: tasty Green Apple and people-pleasing Bubblegum.

Great-Tasting Flavor & Highly Esthetic

“My patients, who were all adults, loved the choice of flavors, especially the Green Apple flavor!” shared Fern Rothstein, an RDH who has been practicing for 43 years. “I also loved the color, and so did my patients.”

Highly esthetic, FluoroCal is a white varnish that blends in with natural tooth color, a feature that Cheri Lindstrom, RDH, BS, said her patients also appreciated.

“The color was good because it matched the enamel and did not make patients look like they had sticky fluoride on their teeth,” she said.

Say Goodbye to Sensitivity

FluoroCal contains tri-calcium phosphate, which has been shown to provide greater protection in the treatment of hypersensitive teeth as well as acid resistance when combined with fluoride.¹ Application is fast and easy with an included brush, and when applied to dentin and enamel, FluoroCal provides sensitivity relief through mechanical occlusion or “blocking” of dentin tubules. The varnish penetrates and seals exposed dentin tubules, the root cause of dentinal hypersensitivity, and offers immediate sensitivity relief to hypersensitive teeth.

“We were looking to treat sensitivity for exposed root surfaces, and overall, my patients had a good response to sensitivity from cold from water and air while scaling after we treated them with FluoroCal,” Lindstrom shared. “For one specific patient, FluoroCal was placed at the root surface and when she returned for a follow-up visit, she was able to tell us she was still not having sensitivity even after 10-plus days.”

Rothstein also said her practice used FluoroCal as a preventive measure after dental work, which has afforded great results as well.

FluoroCal features a sustained fluoride release,* which allows fluoride to be released over a longer period of time and deposited onto the tooth.2 Shown to deliver statistically higher enamel fluoride uptake than leading varnishes when tested,3 the high enamel fluoride uptake can induce fluorapatite by chemically depositing fluoride onto the tooth structure, which can help strengthen the tooth enamel and prevent further sensitivity.4
