The renowned case study competition for aspiring dentists, the Global Clinical Case Contest (GCCC) organised by Dentsply Sirona, enjoys great popularity among dental students from all over the world. At the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) conference from 25th-28th July 2018 in London, the winner of the GCCC was selected for the 13th time by public vote. With around 45% of the votes, Mr. Matteo Salvato from the University of Verona, Italy, was selected as the winner. This was confirmation of the jury result of the global GCCC final, which was held one month earlier in Konstanz. In that final, Mr. Salvato’s case study on a minimally invasive composite restoration with multiple diastema closure came out on top in the competition with a total of 380 participants. Mr. Martin Moubarak from the University of Beirut, Lebanon, and Ms. Anna Braeckmanns from the University of Leuven, Belgium, secured 2nd and 3rd place at both the global final in Konstanz as well as in the public vote in London.
Minimally invasive for more confidence
Mr. Salvato’s award-winning case study documented the treatment of an 11-year-old boy, whose confidence was greatly impacted by the poor aesthetics of his front teeth. In addition to multiple diastemata, a conical tooth in position 12 bothered him in particular, saying it made him look like Dracula. For the restoration, Mr. Matteo Salvato decided on a minimally invasive approach in which he did not touch the existing hard tooth substance once with a drill.
Instead, he used a no-prep procedure with the highly aesthetic composite Ceram.X Duo. His poster, which particularly highlighted the modeling and aesthetic properties of the material, as well as the presentation he gave were very impressive in the global final in Konstanz and at the public vote in London. His tutor, Dr. Francesca Zotti, was also delighted about the award.
Excellent work from the runners-up
The runner-up Mr. Martin Moubarak, who attended the GCCC award ceremony instead of his own graduation in Lebanon, and Ms. Anna Braeckmanns from Belgium, who came in third, also delivered outstanding work with their respective case studies on a front tooth restoration for a 48-year-old patient and the diastema closure for a 38-year-old patient. The close call of the public vote was evidence of the high level of competition – second and third place received a respectable 31% and 24% of the votes.
