Faculty members in the University of Maryland School of Dentistry’s Department of Comprehensive Dentistry have received national recognition for their research on dental implants.
Drs. Mary Anne Melo, Isadora Garcia and Guilherme Arossi were awarded $25,000 by the American Association for Implant Dentistry (AAID) Foundation to support their study, Dysbiosis Across Peri-Implantitis.
The research focuses on how the peri-implant microbiome changes as tissue shifts from health to disease, and how these microbial changes contribute to inflammation and bone loss around dental implants. Peri-implantitis is one of the leading causes of implant failure.
By identifying microbial patterns linked to early disease, the team aims to improve early detection and develop more personalized strategies to prevent peri-implantitis.
The award highlights UMSOD’s ongoing commitment to evidence-based research and to improving long-term outcomes for patients receiving dental implant treatment.
