West Earlham Dental Practice in Norwich has submitted plans to extend its premises at the Earlham West Centre, aiming to boost patient capacity from around 10,000 to 25,000.
The proposed expansion comes in response to a persistent shortage of NHS dental services in Norwich and Norfolk, areas consistently ranked among the country’s lowest for access to dental care.
Practice representatives say the development would help meet the high unmet demand for NHS dentistry locally. The extension is set to include modern decontamination facilities, upgraded IT systems, and a redesigned entrance and reception area to improve patient flow, accessibility, and security.
The proposal also underscores health inequalities in the region, with many residents unable to access timely dental care.
Agents describe the project as a modest but carefully planned upgrade to an established healthcare facility, fully aligned with local and national planning policies.
The initiative coincides with calls from Norfolk MPs for the government to address the region’s ‘dental desert.’ Lawmakers are also pressing for approval of a new dental school at the University of East Anglia, which has received accreditation from the General Dental Council but awaits government approval to enroll students.
