Be the change’: Jackson Native Brings Free Mobile Dental Care to The Community

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) – A nonprofit dental program, New Smiles New Beginnings, is traveling across Jackson to provide free dental services to residents in need.

Jazmyn Ragland, a Jackson native and dental hygienist with 13 years of experience, launched the initiative to make a positive impact in her community.

“I want to be in the community. I want to make a difference. I want to help—just be the change,” Ragland said.

Ragland founded New Smiles New Beginnings in 2023, shortly after graduating from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. She says the idea came from her experience as a clinical assistant, traveling to schools and communities across Mid-Michigan.

“One of the barriers is lack of transportation. Being able to go into these communities and see people where they’re at has been helpful for me and for them,” Ragland explained.

John Willis III, owner of Isaiah’s Hub Community Center and a longtime acquaintance of Ragland, emphasized the importance of bringing services to underserved areas.

“That’s just a blessing in this neighborhood. Many families can’t afford things like that, so it aligns with our mission,” Willis said. “We’ve come together to help families get care and make it easier for them.”

For Ragland, the most rewarding part of the work is building connections with her clients.

“I’ve had people who haven’t had cleanings in 20 or 30 years,” she said. “I’ve seen 12-year-old kids who have never had their teeth cleaned or struggle with dental anxiety. Being able to help those people and give back to my community—that’s very rewarding.”
