SUPERIOR, Wis. (Northern News Now) — Northwood Technical College has unveiled a state-of-the-art Mobile Dental Lab aimed at enhancing student training and expanding community dental services across Northwest Wisconsin.
The college marked the launch with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday at its Superior Campus. The 53-foot mobile unit is designed to provide hands-on experience for dental students while addressing a growing need for dental professionals in the region.
The Mobile Dental Lab will rotate among Northwood Technical’s four campuses, staying at each location for two years. This approach ensures that students from all campuses have access to advanced training and the opportunity to gain real-world experience in a professional dental environment.
“This is about more than just education,” said John Will, president of Northwood Technical College. “We have a shortage of dental assistants and other dental professionals. Programs like this help build a skilled workforce and strengthen healthcare in our communities.”
The college’s occupational programs aim to create a reliable pipeline of trained professionals who are likely to remain in the region, supporting local healthcare infrastructure. The mobile lab not only trains students but also opens doors for community outreach programs that could provide dental care to individuals who might otherwise lack access.
Northwood Technical College plans to partner with community organizations to expand the lab’s impact. While the immediate focus is on student training, long-term goals include delivering essential dental services to underserved populations.
Enrollment in the dental program is selective, requiring students to apply and register for the intensive one-year curriculum. The program emphasizes practical skills, patient care, and familiarity with the latest dental technology, preparing graduates for a competitive job market.
The Mobile Dental Lab project represents a significant investment in both education and community health. The nearly $350,000 initiative was funded through the Wisconsin Technical College System and Delta Dental, reflecting a commitment from both public and private sectors to improve dental education and access to care.
College officials noted that the lab will serve as a model for integrating mobile technology into vocational training. By bringing professional-grade equipment directly to students, Northwood Technical College ensures that graduates enter the workforce with hands-on experience that is often difficult to gain in a traditional classroom setting.
“This program benefits everyone,” Will said. “Students gain valuable skills, and the community benefits from increased access to trained professionals and potentially expanded dental services. It’s a win-win for education and healthcare in our region.”
With the Mobile Dental Lab now operational, Northwood Technical College continues to lead efforts in innovative vocational training, bridging the gap between education and community service, and addressing a critical need for dental care professionals across Northwest Wisconsin.
