The El Dorado Community Health Center (EDCHC) Dental Clinic has officially opened its doors in South Lake Tahoe. To mark the occasion, the clinic will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 6, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The clinic is located at 3443 Lake Tahoe Blvd., Suite 2.
New Clinic Opens to Serve Local Community
EDCHC, in partnership with local Medi-Cal managed care plan Mountain Valley Health Plan and the El Dorado County (EDC) Public Health Division, launched the new dental clinic in the Bijou Shopping Center on October 20, 2025.
Access to oral health care is critical across all stages of life, including pregnancy, childhood, and adulthood. Poor dental health can have lasting effects on overall well-being. By establishing a local dental clinic, EDCHC aims to provide a “dental home” for community members who face financial or insurance barriers.
Addressing Barriers to Dental Care
Residents of South Lake Tahoe, especially low-income or underinsured families, have faced major challenges in accessing dental services. The situation worsened in 2024 when the area’s only dental provider accepting Medi-Cal insurance closed, leaving many without local care options.
According to the 2023-2024 Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment, nearly 20 percent of South Lake Tahoe students had untreated cavities requiring care, and about 10 percent faced urgent dental needs. The shortage of dental services has led to a rise in severe oral health conditions in the region.
Families often struggle with transportation, financial constraints, and work obligations, forcing difficult choices between health care and income. Children sometimes miss full school days to travel to distant clinics in places like Placerville, affecting their education.
Collaborative Efforts to Expand Access
To address this critical need, EDCHC, Mountain Valley Health Plan, and EDC Public Health developed a partnership to provide accessible oral health services for Medi-Cal recipients in the area.
The new South Lake Tahoe clinic offers a local solution, reducing travel and financial barriers while delivering high-quality preventive and restorative dental care. The clinic builds on the existing partnership between EDCHC and EDC Public Health, which operates the El Dorado Smiles Dental Van to bring mobile dental services to local schools. The new facility provides a permanent dental care option and ensures faster follow-up care for students in need.
Clinic Features and Services
The clinic features up to seven dental stations and can initially serve about 200 patients per month, with plans to expand to 400 patients per month. The location is easily accessible by bus and foot and offers ample parking. The ground-level design ensures accessibility for patients with disabilities.
To meet the needs of the diverse community, the clinic employs bilingual staff and uses language assistance technology.
Services prioritize preventive care and aim to improve overall community health.
Comprehensive Care for All Ages
The South Lake Tahoe clinic serves all age groups, including children, adults, and seniors. Services include exams, cleanings, fillings, crowns, extractions, and limited root canals. The clinic also offers a Sliding Fee Discount program for eligible patients and accepts Medi-Cal Dental insurance.
This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment to reducing disparities in oral health care and enhancing the quality of life for residents in the South Lake Tahoe region.
