On a sunny day in Pacific Beach, Sarah St. John sets up her mobile dental practice under a small canopy, preparing to see her first patient of the day.
“I love what I do,” said St. John, founder of Project All Smiles. “Twenty-plus years in dentistry, and this is probably my favorite role.”
About a year ago, St. John launched Project All Smiles, a nonprofit that offers free dental care to underserved individuals and families. The organization also helps connect patients with permanent dental services. St. John previously worked in both dentistry and public health in two other states. She noticed how difficult it can be for low-income people to access dental care and wanted to help fill that gap.
“It’s been wonderful,” St. John said. “It’s similar to a dental office experience, but I get to work with people from all walks of life.”
From Pandemic Pause to Community Care
Project All Smiles was originally established in 2019. However, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed its operations. In October 2024, St. John began seeing patients again, this time at locations like the Shoreline Community Center in Pacific Beach and local safe sleeping sites. In just one year, she has treated more than 500 patients.
Many patients have returned regularly, including Lu Anne Stalmer.
“Dental care is so expensive,” Stalmer said. “Having something like this is real for people. We need a break once in a while.”
Stalmer says she keeps coming back not just for free care, but for St. John’s warmth and dedication.
“Because of her personality and the way she works, it’s really good for people,” Stalmer said.
More Than Just Clean Teeth
St. John hears from patients about the positive impact of her work. Some schedule cleanings before job interviews, family events, or simply for their own well-being. She also teaches her patients about the importance of oral health.
“There is nothing better than the reactions I see,” St. John said. “You can see the confidence boost from the moment they sit down until they leave, and even in the weeks afterward.”
Small Team, Big Impact
St. John delivers this care with a small team. Some days she works alone, while on other days she is assisted by one team member. She hopes to expand her team to include more dental hygienists and assistants, aiming to reach even more people.
“I hope to keep doing this for a long time,” St. John said.
San Diego, her home city, holds a special place in her heart.
“This is the city that gave me my adult opportunities, my education, my family, and now my life’s work,” St. John said. “There’s nothing better than San Diego. We love you, San Diego.”
Recognition for Dedication
For her tireless efforts and contributions to the community, Sarah St. John has been named the winner of the ABC 10News Leadership Award for November.
