National Grant Supports Peri-Implantitis Research at University of Maryland School of Dentistry

Faculty members from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) have earned national recognition for their innovative research on dental implants.

Drs. Mary Anne Melo, Isadora Garcia, and Guilherme Arossi were awarded a $25,000 grant from the American Association for Implant Dentistry (AAID) Foundation to fund their study, Dysbiosis Across Peri-Implantitis.

The research focuses on understanding how the microbiome around dental implants changes from a healthy state to one of disease. Specifically, the team is investigating how these microbial shifts contribute to inflammation and bone loss, which are central to peri-implantitis — a major cause of implant failure.

By identifying microbial patterns linked to early stages of peri-implantitis, the researchers aim to enhance early detection methods and develop personalized approaches to prevent the condition.

This grant underscores UMSOD’s commitment to advancing evidence-based research and improving long-term outcomes for dental implant patients.
