USD Dental Hygiene Department to Offer Free Dental Services for Kids in Vermillion

The University of South Dakota’s Department of Dental Hygiene will host its third annual “Give Kids a Smile” event on Saturday, February 28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Delta Dental Oral Health Center on the USD campus in Vermillion.

The event will provide free dental services, including exams, cleanings, X-rays, sealants, fluoride treatments, and limited dental work to uninsured or underinsured children ages 0-18 who reside in Clay County.

Molly Molencamp, a lecturer in the Department of Dental Hygiene, emphasized the event’s importance in supporting community health. “This is our third year hosting, and we’re excited to continue offering essential care to local children,” she said.

The event also serves as a valuable learning opportunity for students. “It allows our students to gain hands-on experience while working with professionals to make a real impact,” Molencamp added.

This initiative is part of the American Dental Association’s nationwide “Give Kids A Smile” program, which seeks to address preventable dental diseases among children.

The event is made possible through the support of USD faculty, staff, and volunteer dental professionals, including Dr. Matthew Knutson and Dr. Katie Lee, who donate their time and expertise.
