A group of dentists in Wyoming have come together to offer free dental care to veterans across several communities. The Wyoming Dental Association South Central District recently launched its first event called Saluting Smiles: Donated Dental Care for Veterans. This initiative brought together 11 dental offices located in Laramie, Cheyenne, and Torrington, all working together to help veterans receive much-needed dental services at no cost.
During this community-wide event, more than 100 veterans were treated for various dental needs. The total value of the services provided was over $67,800. The veterans received care that ranged from basic cleanings to important treatments like diagnostic imaging, fillings, crowns, tooth extractions, and emergency dental procedures. For many, this was a chance to receive care they might not get otherwise. Organizers said the event addressed not only oral health but also recognized veterans for their service.
Sandy McFarland, who serves as deputy director of the Wyoming Veterans Commission, highlighted the importance of the event. She explained that each appointment was an example of people sharing their time and expertise, showing true gratitude to veterans. The care included comprehensive exams, X-rays, fluoride treatments, adjustments to dentures, and different specialized procedures tailored to each patient’s needs.
In addition to dental treatments, companies like Henry Schein Cares and Colgate contributed by donating oral health supplies. These items helped ensure veterans could care for their teeth after the event ended. The supplies were given to veterans as they finished their appointments.
Organizers stressed that this event was only the beginning of a series of future efforts to support veterans’ health. They said caring for veterans requires ongoing help, not just one-time ceremonies. Initiatives like Saluting Smiles show how local communities can work together to fill important gaps in care for those who have served.
