Social Media Could Boost Awareness of Dental Services for Kids in Qatar

Doha, Qatar: Social media may play a key role in helping parents in Qatar secure dental services for kids, a new study suggests.

The research, published in the Qatar Medical Journal, examined parents’ awareness of the “dental home” concept and their willingness to use social media to access oral health information for preschool-aged children. A dental home is defined as a continuous relationship between a child and a dentist to ensure comprehensive oral healthcare from an early age.

The cross-sectional study surveyed 384 parents and caregivers visiting Sidra Medicine, achieving a 94% response rate. Findings revealed strong interest once participants were introduced to the concept. Nearly 73% of parents expressed willingness to establish a dental home for their children.

Most respondents were over 30, and about half held a college degree. Almost all reported active social media use, with 60% preferring to receive oral health messages through these platforms. Nearly 60% believed social media information could influence their decision to seek dental services for their children, while over 77% agreed it could promote good oral hygiene practices. Facebook and Instagram emerged as the most popular channels.

The study also highlighted the importance of healthcare professionals in digital outreach. Around 75% of respondents felt primary care physicians or their representatives should use social media to provide reminders and guidance about dental home care.

Statistical analysis showed no significant differences in perceptions based on age, gender, or education, indicating broad acceptance of social media as a health communication tool across demographic groups.

Researchers concluded that social media can effectively raise awareness of early childhood oral health and encourage the establishment of dental homes, while paediatricians and primary care providers remain central to guiding families toward preventive dental care.
