Cheap Veg Snack Helps Clean Teeth Naturally, Dentist Says

A dentist has revealed that an inexpensive vegetable already found in many kitchens could help keep teeth clean and bright without costly whitening products.

Dr Jyothi Chintamani of Dental Arch says raw, crunchy vegetables such as carrots and celery can act as a natural polishing aid for teeth. Their firm, fibrous texture creates a gentle brushing effect while chewing, helping to remove soft plaque and surface stains before they settle.

“People often think they need expensive whitening kits,” Dr Chintamani said. “But everyday foods can support oral health in practical ways. Raw carrots and celery behave like tiny natural cleaning pads.”

She added that a bag of celery costing less than £1 can last several days and support a brighter smile when eaten regularly.

The advice is supported by Bupa UK, which notes that carrots require significant chewing, stimulating saliva production. Saliva helps clean teeth, neutralise acids and protect enamel. Bupa also highlights that carrots contain B vitamins that support gum health.

Other foods with similar effects include apples, strawberries and nuts, although Bupa advises rinsing with water after eating fruit due to its sugar and acidity.

Dr Chintamani said many patients are seeking budget-friendly ways to improve oral health, often turning to social media for advice. She believes crunchy vegetables offer a simple and effective option.

“Swapping a sugary snack for carrot sticks reduces sugar intake and helps clean teeth at the same time,” she said. “It’s a smart two-in-one benefit.”

She also emphasised the role of saliva in maintaining clean teeth. “Crunchy vegetables stimulate saliva, which washes away food particles and protects enamel. Carrots and celery encourage this process naturally.”

However, Dr Chintamani stressed that vegetables should not replace brushing or professional dental care. “This is a small daily boost,” she said. “It won’t replace your toothbrush, but it can help maintain a cleaner-looking tooth surface between brushes.”

According to the dentist, texture is key. “Carrots and celery are ideal because they are crisp and fibrous. Apples can help too, but it’s best to rinse with water afterwards.”

She concluded: “Small daily habits can make a noticeable difference. It’s simple, healthy and accessible for most people.”
