Experts Gather in Munich to Advance Preventive and Minimally Invasive Oral Care

MUNICH, Germany — On December 1-2, leading dental experts from Europe and the US convened at Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich for a consensus workshop hosted by the International Society for Minimum Intervention Dentistry. The two-day event focused on advancing minimum intervention oral care (MIOC) and minimally invasive dentistry.

The workshop aimed to define best practices, shape policy strategies, enhance educational approaches, and refine clinical management protocols suitable for both European and global oral healthcare systems.

Key discussions included structured approaches for national MIOC implementation, identifying challenges and opportunities for wider adoption, and outlining steps toward a consensus paper to guide future policies, curricula, and clinical standards.

Speakers emphasized the importance of embedding preventive and minimally invasive strategies into mainstream dental practice to improve patient outcomes and support sustainable oral healthcare models worldwide.

Prof. Avijit Banerjee, honorary consultant and clinical lead in restorative dentistry at King’s College London, described the workshop as “inspiring and well-structured,” noting its potential to expand MIOC in everyday practice.

Prof. Falk Schwendicke, director and chair of the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Periodontology at Ludwig-Maximilians University, highlighted the event’s collaborative spirit and its role in unifying clinical practice, education, and policy around prevention-focused oral care.

Prof. Ivana Miletic, founder and president of the Croatian Society of Minimum Intervention Dentistry, added that the discussions offered practical pathways for integrating MIOC into routine dental care, marking a significant step toward transforming oral healthcare.
