Northeast Iowa Community College Opens Affordable Dentist Clinic for Residents

Northeast Iowa Community College has launched an affordable dentist clinic to expand access to basic oral care for area residents.

The NICC clinic offers exams, X-rays, cleanings and fillings at reduced rates. Services are provided in a learning-centered environment overseen by faculty and student clinicians.

Jennifer Kohlmeyer, NICC dental assisting clinic coordinator and faculty member, emphasized the need for affordable care. “Dental care is often neglected due to a lack of access to affordable services,” she said. “When these issues are not addressed early, they can become serious and may require emergency treatment.”

Health officials warn that delayed oral care can affect both physical and mental health. Addressing dental problems early can lower the risk of heart disease, respiratory infections and oral complications related to diabetes. Studies show about one in four adults aged 35 to 44 have untreated dental cavities, officials said.

The clinic encourages anyone without dental insurance—or anyone who hasn’t seen a dentist recently—to schedule an appointment. “No matter how long it’s been, a fresh start is waiting,” Kohlmeyer said. “We’re here to help, not judge.”

Appointments are available Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The clinic will operate from January through March.
