Dental Insurance Deadline Nears as Scotch Plains Dentist Urges Year-End Visits

SCOTCH PLAINS — Patients should use their dental insurance benefits before year’s end or risk losing them, Dr. Maureen Maximos of Dentalcare Associates warned this week.

“If you do not use your allotted dental benefits by the end of the year, you lose them,” said Dr. Maximos, who is known to patients as Dr. Max. “Those benefits do not carry over.”

She urged both new and existing patients to schedule cleanings and any needed dental work now, before the holiday rush makes appointments scarce.

Many plans cover at least two cleanings a year — some cover three or four — and regular cleanings help prevent more serious, costly problems, Dr. Maximos said. Delaying minor work can turn it into a longer, more expensive treatment process.

She also noted that some policies have annual maximums; for example, a $1,000 yearly limit leaves only $500 available if half has already been used, potentially increasing out-of-pocket costs if treatment is postponed to the next year.

Dentalcare Associates, at 567 Park Ave., offers comprehensive family dentistry, including preventive care, implants, gum therapy, extractions, root canals and Invisalign.

The practice includes an on-staff periodontist and long-tenured staff. Dr. Lara Merker has served as the practice’s periodontal and implant specialist since 2008.

The office uses digital X-rays, intraoral imaging and strict sterilization protocols. “We strive to provide dental health care versus disease care,” Dr. Maximos said, emphasizing thorough exams, oral cancer screenings, and preventive measures such as cleanings, flossing, sealants and fluoride.

Dentalcare Associates is accepting new and existing patients. Appointments can be scheduled at the Scotch Plains office.
