This weekend, Philadelphia will welcome a pop-up clinic offering free health care, often drawing overnight lines.
The mobile clinic, run by Remote Area Medical, a Tennessee-based nonprofit organization that has been traveling the country since 1985, provides free dental, vision, and general health services, including well-women’s exams and preventive screenings, as well as on-site eyeglasses. No ID or insurance is required for any of these services, making them accessible to as many people as possible.
This year marks the third time the clinic has landed in Philadelphia, thanks to a partnership between local nonprofit DentMed Inc. and the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office. The clinic will be held at 6:00 AM on Saturday and Sunday at 4021 Parkside Avenue in West Philadelphia.
Patients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is reached. “As long as there are providers available, we’re committed to providing care to as many people as possible,” said clinic coordinator Sandra Hall.
With millions of people in the United States uninsured or underinsured, free health care is crucial. Approximately one in 14 Philadelphia residents lacks health insurance.
To facilitate queuing, parking will be open at midnight the night before the event.
The Remote Area Health Center served 36,000 patients in 2024 and expects to welcome its one millionth patient by the end of this year.
