ADA Invites Public Feedback on Draft Guidelines for Early Oral Cancer Detection

The American Dental Association (ADA) is seeking public input on its latest oral health guideline aimed at improving early detection and management of oral cancer. Feedback will be accepted through Feb. 6.

This guideline, the third in a series of evidence-based recommendations, focuses on the use of light-based devices to guide biopsy decisions. Earlier rounds of public consultation addressed brush cytology and vital staining adjuncts.

The ADA encourages dentists, healthcare professionals, patients, advocacy organizations, and policymakers to review the draft and share their perspectives. An optional virtual listening session is scheduled for Feb. 3, 4–5 p.m. CST, though participation is not required to submit feedback.

These recommendations result from a collaboration between the ADA and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine to update a 2017 guideline on evaluating potentially malignant oral disorders, including oral cancer.

Launched in 2025, the ADA Living Guideline Program offers oral health providers and patients continually updated, evidence-based guidance. Unlike traditional guidelines, living guidelines are revised promptly as new research emerges, while maintaining rigorous methodological standards.

The ADA plans to review public comments and incorporate them into the final guidance on light-based adjuncts, which is expected to be published by mid-2026.
