Affordable Dental Care Program Error Affects 70,000 Canadians, No Repayment Required

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) has made dental care more affordable and accessible for millions of Canadians.

However, the federal government has revealed that an error in calculating applicants’ income led to incorrect eligibility assessments for about 70,000 members—roughly 1% of active participants.

According to Health Canada, the issue occurred during the initial eligibility determination process. The problem has since been corrected through a system update.

Of those affected, approximately 28,000 people have already received dental treatments under the plan.

Starting October 17, the government began notifying impacted individuals about changes to their CDCP coverage, which will take effect on October 24, 2025.

Officials confirmed that affected members will not be required to repay any benefits or co-payment differences for dental care received before that date.

Canadians are encouraged to verify their CDCP coverage before each dental visit to ensure eligibility and proper billing. Those without a My Service Canada Account (MSCA) should create one to receive updates or contact the CDCP line at 1-833-537-4342.

Despite the recent error, the CDCP continues to benefit more than 5.5 million Canadians. Over 3 million have already received care through the program, saving an average of $800 annually.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity of publicly funded health programs and ensuring responsible use of taxpayer funds.
