Hamilton County, Tennessee, is preparing to close its dental clinic as rising supply costs make operations unsustainable. The county announced that 15 positions will be eliminated and two programs will end this summer, including the Dental Clinic within the Clinical Department.
Officials said the cost of running the dental clinic has increased by 47 percent over the past five years. This sharp rise in dental supply prices has made it difficult for the county to maintain affordable services for residents.
The closure has sparked concern among local residents. Many expressed disappointment on social media, recalling the dental clinic’s importance to the community. One long-time patient commented on how valuable the clinic was during their young adult years. Others criticized the county for cutting services while funding other programs.
The county also said it will redirect $60,000 previously allocated to the Community Assistance Program to the United Way. The United Way will monitor the use of these funds and provide annual reports detailing expenditures and community impact.
Terran Anderson with United Way explained that the organization focuses on helping Alice families, who are employed but face financial challenges. “Cost is the biggest barrier when it comes to getting care,” Anderson said. “We do our best to fill gaps for people in need through resources like 211 and our community center.”
The county encouraged patients affected by the dental clinic closure to seek care at other local providers. Nonprofits and clinics such as Smiles, Cempa Community Care, and Erlanger Health Centers may see increased patient demand, though they are experienced in handling such challenges. The Homeless Health Care Center Dental Clinic and the School-Based Dental Sealant Program will continue to operate as usual.
The dental clinic is scheduled to close on July 1. County staff will assist patients with referrals to other dental providers, while the Human Resources Department will support affected employees with job placement and resources to transition to new roles.
