After nearly a year of construction, the renovation of the Iowa City Free Medical and Dental Clinic is finally complete. The clinic, which serves thousands of patients annually, is now ready to meet the growing needs of the community.
The upgrades are designed to help staff better serve the growing number of patients. Currently, there can be a wait of up to three months for new appointments.

Founded in the 1970s, the clinic has long relied on community support to sustain its operations. Iowa City and Johnson County donated a combined $1.35 million to fund the renovations.

“I’m deeply honored to be able to make this happen,” said Executive Director Jenny Schmid. “Their support shows that they view us as a vital healthcare provider.”

Medical Director Dr. Cecilia Norris called the renovation a project of passion and purpose. “Everyone here believes in our mission,” she said. “I became a doctor to provide real care to people, not just to work within the insurance system.”
Dr. Norris added that the clinic remains committed to improving access to healthcare for underserved populations.
While construction is ongoing, the clinic will only be closed for a few days at a time. The clinic has been operating at the clinic’s location on Towncrest Drive since 2006.
The public is welcome to attend the clinic’s ribbon-cutting and open house celebration starting at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
