NANAIMO — For many, a visit to the dentist sparks anxiety. The whirring of drills and the sting of anesthesia have long been accepted as unavoidable parts of dental care. But a local dentist is changing that narrative.
Dr. Michel Séguin of Seven Sails Dental Centre is introducing a state-of-the-art laser technology he calls a “game-changer” for patient comfort. “Growing up, I was always terrified of the dentist. When I began practicing, my main goal was to ensure patients feel comfortable in my clinic,” said Dr. Séguin.
After years of research, Dr. Séguin found a solution that addresses both pain and fear. His clinic is the first and only in Nanaimo to adopt this advanced laser system. Unlike traditional drills, which rely on friction, the laser uses focused light to vaporize tissue at a microscopic level.
“The laser is gentle, produces no heat, and is often needle-free and pain-free,” Dr. Séguin explained. By reducing or eliminating the need for anesthesia, treatments can also be completed more quickly. The technology is versatile, capable of addressing everything from common cavities to complex root canals and soft-tissue procedures, such as tongue-tie corrections.
Patients have responded positively to the innovation. “They’re often surprised and delighted by how little they feel. Many are in and out faster, with quicker recovery times,” Dr. Séguin said.
The dentist hopes the technology will shift public perception of dental care in Nanaimo. “I want people to know that this safe and effective option is available to them,” he said.
