As 2025 enters its second half, Romania’s dental sector is under increasing socio-economic pressure.
The latest analysis by CEC Dental Clinic shows that the uncertainty caused by the rising cost of living and tax burden is causing more and more Romanians to give up or postpone expensive, time-consuming or cosmetic dental treatments.
There are currently more than 17,000 dental clinics in Romania, but only 35 of them are public institutions. With the reality of rising living and treatment costs, basic dental care is becoming out of reach, especially for low- and middle-income groups.
Despite the industry’s advocacy for equal dental care, a large number of patients still have difficulty accessing timely and appropriate treatment.
Narcisa Calot?, founder and dentist of CEC Dental, said the only sustainable solution lies in prevention. “If Romanians do not regularly undergo preventive treatment, their dental health will be at great risk in the future.”
Many patients choose to postpone non-urgent treatment until the toothache becomes unbearable before seeking help, but this “waiting mechanism” may exacerbate the deterioration of oral health in the long run.
Despite the huge economic pressure, some people have begun to realize that prevention is much more cost-effective than treatment. This has also prompted more and more people to take the initiative to receive regular check-ups and basic care services.
“We are increasing the education of patients to encourage them to pay attention to preventive care, focus on early detection and intervention, and reduce the cost of related treatments,” Calot? stressed.
She pointed out that brushing alone cannot completely avoid caries, gingivitis and other common oral diseases.
Due to the lack of prevention awareness and regular check-ups, Romanians generally start to lose their teeth around the age of 40, much earlier than the EU average. Some people have even lost all or most of their teeth before retirement.
Tooth loss not only affects appearance and self-esteem, but also affects the digestive system, pronunciation and social life.
Untreated dental diseases can also cause cardiovascular, lung and even digestive tract diseases, causing wider health problems.
From an economic point of view, the advantages of prevention are even more obvious. A high-end dental implant costs about 2,000 euros, and if a full restoration is carried out, the cost of treating the upper and lower jaws can be as high as 30,000 euros.
Annual preventive care – including 2-3 routine checkups, scaling, professional cleaning, airflow therapy and topical fluoridation – costs between 100 and 300 euros per year.
By comparison, dental implants can cost 10 times more than prevention, and complex restorations 150 times more.
“We can no longer ‘buy’ teeth with loans, but should invest in daily care earlier. Regular checkups and cleanings are not only cheaper and simpler, but also effectively prevent bigger problems from happening.”
Calot? added, “The problems caused by tooth loss go far beyond appearance. Its consequences can affect all body systems and bring a lasting health burden.”
Despite the overall tense situation, CEC Dental Clinic said that the number of patients seen in the first half of this year increased by 15% year-on-year. This increase is due to the popularization of the concept of prevention and the gradual improvement of people’s awareness of their own health management.
Technological advances have also promoted the modernization of clinic services. New technologies such as digital scanning, 3D printing, traceability sterilization systems, and intelligent management software are becoming the key to building a competitive advantage for dental clinics.
Looking ahead, the dental service market in 2025 will be more diverse and challenging, but also full of opportunities.
Dental institutions that focus on service quality, promote the concept of prevention, and actively embrace technological innovation will stand out in the fierce competition.
CEC Dental is one of them, committed to providing patients with an excellent experience and constantly developing in sync with the needs of the times.
