Teeth Cleaning Urged as Filipino Dentist Calls for Stronger Oral Health Habits in 2026

Oral health remains a low priority for many Filipinos, with dental problems often ignored until they begin to disrupt daily life, according to dental professionals.

Dentist Camille Ampong, founder of Ampong Dental, said poor oral care continues to be overlooked despite its strong link to overall health and well-being. She urged Filipinos to pay closer attention to their dental health in 2026.

Ampong, whose clinic has treated public figures such as Mimiyuuuh, KaladKaren, Benedict Cua and Joy Barcoma, said good oral hygiene starts at home and involves more than routine dental visits.

“Oral health is more than just going to the dentist,” she said in an interview. “Many people neglect brushing for at least two minutes, flossing and tongue cleaning. Others skip regular checkups or stop wearing retainers after braces, which can lead to gum disease and tooth loss.”

She stressed that dental care should be treated as part of overall wellness, noting that awareness of common dental issues can help prevent pain, expensive treatments and long-term health problems.

As part of her oral health advocacy, Ampong reminded the public to limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals. She also advised brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and rinsing with water when brushing is not possible. Dental checkups every six months remain essential, she said.

Ampong identified tooth staining and discoloration as common concerns among Filipinos, often linked to local diets and habits. “Frequent consumption of coffee, tea, soy sauce, shrimp paste and tobacco products can darken teeth over time and affect confidence,” she said.

She added that persistent bad breath should not be dismissed, as it may signal underlying dental or systemic health issues.

Ampong said addressing overlooked dental concerns has strengthened her sense of purpose as a practitioner, particularly when patients regain confidence through proper treatment.

“I always tell patients to relax and not feel embarrassed about their dental problems,” she said. “My goal is to help them overcome insecurities about their smiles through the right care.”

Ampong Dental offers preventive, restorative and cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics, and advanced services such as TMJ therapy, bite rehabilitation and dental implants. Ampong said her practice prioritizes functional solutions that support long-term oral health while also addressing aesthetic needs.
