Swindon residents can now access thousands of additional dental appointments for urgent care, following a nationwide expansion of dental services. The move coincides with the official opening of Abbey Meads Dental Practice in north Swindon.
The new slots aim to assist patients with immediate dental needs, including severe pain, infections, and broken teeth. Jonathan Bower-Davies, chief dentist at the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board (ICB), emphasized the importance of timely treatment:
“These additional urgent appointments should make a real difference to people who need prompt dental care. Allowing dental problems to worsen can have a long-term negative impact on a person’s oral health and overall wellbeing.”
Unlike routine appointments, patients do not need to be registered with a dental practice to access these urgent care slots.
Across the country, around 700,000 extra urgent care appointments have been made available.
Ebrahim Iravani, business manager at Abbey Meads Dental Practice, highlighted the practice’s focus on community health:
“A healthy smile is essential for overall wellbeing. Our new facility will make accessing vital dental care simpler for residents of all ages, especially young children in this area of Swindon.”
The practice, which opened to patients on January 16, features 11 treatment rooms and operates entirely on solar power.
Abbey Meads Dental Practice also prioritizes community engagement and preventive care. Over the past year, the team conducted dental screenings for more than 5,000 children across 15 Swindon schools. This programme responds to data indicating that children in Swindon are more likely to require hospital tooth extractions than those in other regions.
Improving children’s dental health has become a strategic priority for the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire ICB, which has overseen dental service commissioning since April 2023. The additional urgent care appointments form part of the ICB’s ongoing efforts to ensure timely access for individuals with pressing dental needs.
