A young British model has spoken out about his challenging experience after travelling to Turkey for cosmetic dental work, highlighting the risks faced by patients seeking treatment overseas. Jack James, aged 22 and from Manchester, decided to get veneers to improve his appearance on camera. He travelled to Istanbul and paid £3,000 at a dentist clinic for this procedure.
Initially, Jack was satisfied with his new teeth. However, several months after the operation, serious problems began to appear. He noticed his gums were bleeding and swollen, and he suffered from unpleasant breath and pain. After visiting an emergency dentist, tests revealed infection and extensive damage to his teeth that would cost up to £20,000 to fix in the UK.
Unable to afford repairs locally, Jack contacted the original clinic in Turkey but was told the issues were not their responsibility. The clinic offered to fix the problems for an additional £4,500. Jack returned to Istanbul in June and underwent further surgery, which included removing the infected teeth and fitting temporary replacements. Despite this, he was disturbed to discover his natural teeth had been filed down so much that they resembled sharp shark teeth. He was eventually provided with a new set of permanent teeth.
After coming back to Britain, the ordeal continued when one of his crowns fell out while brushing. Jack described feeling shocked and upset, wishing he had chosen a less invasive procedure. He now warns others to carefully research dental clinics before committing to treatment abroad, especially cosmetic procedures.
Jack’s story is not unique, as many people in the UK struggle to secure dentist appointments. Some experts say that difficulties in accessing local care, particularly on the NHS, are pushing more Britons to seek treatment in other countries like Turkey. Clinic directors have noted a rising number of British patients and caution that while many have good experiences, some suffer challenging complications that can be expensive and distressing to resolve.
