Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – A breakthrough method of screening oral cancer patients with the use of smartphones may soon be introduced in Malaysia.
Prof. Dr. Paul Salins, one of the pioneers who introduced this technology in India, shared this method of screening high-risk individuals. “The future of modern medicine is via the use of mobile devices. This has already been proven in healthcare, personalised medicine using genomic signatures, and personalising cancer treatment,” said Prof. Salins, director of Mazumdar Shaw Medical Centre in Bangalore and an authority on craniofacial surgery.
He shared his knowledge and experience with dental practitioners, revealing the latest trends in oral cancer detection at the Malaysian Private Dental Practitioners Association (MPDPA) annual scientific convention and trade exhibition held at the Pullman Hotel.
He is currently working with a research group at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to use smartphone-based detection of oral cancer and other diseases.
The convention was attended by dentists, dental specialists, doctors and others involved in cancer research and treatment. The theme of this year’s MPDPA convention is “Into the Future with Dentistry” and will also feature other world-renowned speakers.
MPDPA president Dr R. Vijendran said the convention was a great opportunity for dental practitioners in Malaysia to update themselves on state-of-the-art trends. “Dentists play a unique role in the identification of oral cancer because most of the time they are the first medical personnel to examine the oral cavity,” he added.
