Welshpool Dental clinic to End NHS Care in April, Move to Private Plans Amid Funding Row

A dental practice in Welshpool has announced it will stop providing NHS treatment from April 1, 2026, and switch to a fully private model.

Mydentist, based on Severn Street, informed patients of the decision in an email sent on Friday, February 27, by Dr Amran Mahmood Hassan Husain. The message confirmed that the practice would transition to an independent model and no longer deliver NHS-funded services.

Dr Husain said the clinic remained committed to offering high-quality care in a safe and welcoming environment. He added that further details about ongoing care options were included in an attached letter.

Under the new private structure, patients can join monthly dental plans. Fees range from £10.50 per month, covering one dental and one hygienist appointment annually, to £32.50 per month for two dental check-ups and four hygienist visits.

The email encouraged patients to contact the practice with questions and to book their next examination once enrolled in a plan. Dr Husain also expressed “deep appreciation” for patients’ continued support.

The move has prompted criticism from local representatives, who say it reflects wider problems in NHS dentistry.

Newtown councillor Joy Jones described the change as “a failure of the system,” claiming the practice had been unable to recruit an NHS clinician. She said the building would remain open, but NHS services within it would end.

“This isn’t a closure of the building. It’s the closure of the NHS inside it,” she wrote on social media, questioning what the decision means for dental access in Welshpool, Newtown and the wider Powys area.

Russell George MS said he had been contacted by dozens of concerned residents following the announcement. He highlighted confusion over the clinic’s status, noting that while the letter stated no NHS appointments would be offered, the company has also said it remains an NHS practice.

Mr George confirmed he has written to Powys Teaching Health Board seeking clarification. He said Mydentist holds a contract to provide NHS dental services and asked how this aligns with the decision to cease NHS appointments.

He has also requested confirmation from the practice about its future intentions.

The development adds to growing concerns about access to NHS dentistry in Powys, with local leaders calling on health authorities and the Welsh Government to address what they describe as a worsening crisis in provision.
