Dental students at the University of Lancashire are offering patients complex oral surgery at half the usual cost.
Qualified dentists undertaking postgraduate training can now perform wisdom tooth extractions or other complicated tooth and root removals for £35 per tooth at the university’s Preston Campus dental clinic.
Professor Kate Taylor, a specialist in oral surgery, said the initiative addresses a pressing need. “People are desperate for dental care. More than 4,000 patients in Lancashire are currently waiting for treatment,” she said.
The community dental clinic, led by specialists and consultants, accepts patients referred for specialist treatment experiencing long delays. Taylor added, “It’s a win-win. Patients receive low-cost care, while qualified dentists develop their skills and carry out advanced procedures in top-tier facilities.”
Procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. For comparison, NHS patients in England typically pay £75.30 for a course of treatment involving wisdom tooth surgery or complex tooth extraction.
