Thousands of residents in Tiruchy district have received critical health screenings through the ongoing ‘Nalam Kaakkum Stalin’ community medical camps. Conducted between August 2025 and January 2026, these camps provided services to over 54,000 people, focusing on early detection of heart, dental, and other health issues.
District health officials reported that more than 6,000 people were referred for advanced heart check-ups after initial screenings. The camps performed over 33,000 ECG tests and 4,200 ECHO tests, identifying many with potential cardiac concerns. Patients who needed urgent treatment were sent to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, while others were guided to nearby Primary Health Centres for continued care.
The initiative addressed a major barrier for the community. Many had previously avoided heart health tests because of fear or the high costs at private hospitals, where such screenings can cost thousands of rupees. The free check-ups offered by these camps, especially for women and older adults, made comprehensive health care more accessible to all.
Alongside cardiac screenings, the camps also provided additional services. Over 4,000 residents received dental checkups, and nearly 6,000 accessed other wellness care such as AYUSH treatments after completing the main health checks. This shows how the program aims for integrated health solutions beyond just heart health, connecting participants with multiple types of care at one location.
Health workers are closely tracking patients referred for heart issues, making sure they continue with their treatments and get their prescribed medications at local clinics. Those who need further procedures, including possible surgeries, are being supported through the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. The camps highlight how combining health services can boost detection, increase access, and improve long-term outcomes for the whole community.
