Advances in Digital Workflows Catalyze Complex Full-Arch Implant Success in Dentistry

A team led by Professor John A. Sorensen from the University of Washington has successfully completed a complex full-arch implant rehabilitation using a fully digital workflow, highlighting advancements in implant dentistry. The treatment, which addressed significant anatomical and occlusal challenges, was notable for its use of state-of-the-art digital planning and fabrication tools.

The patient in this case presented with severe limitations, including a complicated extension of the maxillary sinus, making traditional implant placement and prosthetic planning difficult. To resolve these issues, the team designed a custom implant-milled bar to support a monolithic zirconia full-arch prosthesis. This required precise coordination between clinical staff and dental technicians.

Professor Sorensen, a recognized leader in prosthodontics, worked with Dr. Sarah Haddad, a resident in the Graduate Prosthodontics Program, and partnered with Besmile’s technical team. The entire prosthetic design and manufacturing process was managed through Besmile’s in-house digital ecosystem, which eliminated the need for physical shipping and allowed for real-time 3D communication across teams. This digital approach greatly reduced treatment times and streamlined the process.

Professor Sorensen emphasized that the fully digital workflow enabled early identification and management of potential challenges, resulting in highly predictable and consistent clinical outcomes. Collaboration between clinical and laboratory teams was greatly improved, resulting in precise treatment and enhanced patient care.

Building on the insights from this case, Professor Sorensen is scheduled to present at LMT Lab Day Chicago, sharing his expertise on digital treatment planning. Besmile is also actively promoting digital dental education and supports the dental community through initiatives such as training, lectures, and workshops. Their comprehensive efforts are advancing both digital and restorative dentistry, helping clinicians worldwide navigate complex implant cases more successfully.
