UK Review Finds Tesco’s 50p Toothpaste Rivals Expensive Brands for Freshness and Value

As consumer prices continue to rise across the UK, many shoppers are exploring supermarket own-brand products in search of both value and effectiveness. This week, a comparative review of popular toothpastes found that several supermarket formulas offered notable savings without sacrificing quality.

Among the tested brands were Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Aldi, and the well-known Colgate. Each toothpaste was evaluated for taste, texture, freshness, price, and cleaning ability. The standout performer was Tesco Essential Cavity Protection Toothpaste, which costs just 50p for a 100ml tube. Despite its budget-friendly price, the review highlighted its pleasantly mild mint flavour, reliable cavity protection, and antibacterial properties. The toothpaste received a high online rating of 4.4 and was praised for delivering freshness at a fraction of the cost of premium brands.

Morrisons Essentials Fresh Mint Toothpaste also carried a price tag of 50p for 100ml. The reviewer noted its smooth consistency and pleasing minty taste, declaring it a strong value option. However, it was marked down slightly for lacking the freshness and mouth feel provided by Tesco’s offering.

Sainsbury’s Everyday Dental Sensitive Toothpaste, which costs £1 per tube, was commended for helping to reduce dental sensitivity and having good consistency. Yet, its aftertaste and lack of lasting freshness made it less popular with testers. Asda’s 6-in-1 Toothpaste and Aldi Dentitex Whitening Toothpaste both disappointed for leaving users with dry mouths and failing to deliver a clean or refreshed feeling, despite affordable prices.

The review also tested Colgate Total Original Protection, priced at about £3. The reviewer questioned whether the higher price brought enough additional benefits, noting that freshness and cleaning sensation were not significantly improved compared to Tesco’s much cheaper alternative. This comparative review suggests that shoppers can find effective, pleasant toothpaste options among supermarket own brands, saving money without compromising on oral care.
