Tooth Care Warning As NHS Lanarkshire Urges Residents Not To Delay Dental Visits In Winter

NHS Lanarkshire has urged residents not to put off dental appointments during the colder months, warning that delays can lead to more serious oral health problems.

The health board said winter routines are often disrupted by seasonal illness, shorter daylight hours and competing priorities, causing some people to postpone check-ups or treatment. However, it stressed that dental care is a vital part of overall wellbeing.

Geraldeen Irving, clinical director for the Public Dental Service at NHS Lanarkshire, said looking after teeth and gums should not be neglected during winter.

“When people are feeling unwell or under pressure, dental care can take a back seat, but delaying treatment can allow problems to develop,” she said. “Whether you are registered with a dentist or not, support is available locally, and we encourage people to seek advice early.”

NHS Lanarkshire is reminding residents that early action can prevent minor dental issues from becoming urgent or difficult to manage.

Adults aged 16 and over who are not registered with an NHS dentist can access one free course of treatment through the Public Dental Service’s dental outreach clinic at the Buchanan Centre in Coatbridge. Treatment is provided by dental and dental hygiene or therapy students under the supervision of experienced dentists.

People seeking ongoing NHS dental care can find information on local practices, including those accepting new patients, on the NHS Lanarkshire dental services website.

Registered patients may also be referred to the outreach clinic for a single treatment or a full course of care where appropriate.
