French company Kolibree is bringing augmented reality (AR) to oral care with a new smart toothbrush designed to make brushing fun for children. Unveiled at CES 2018, the device pairs with a motion-tracking app that uses a smartphone’s front-facing camera to immerse kids in interactive games while they brush.
The Magik toothbrush comes with a phone stand, allowing children to focus on brushing without holding the device. Kids can choose from 15 games featuring pirates, princesses, monsters, and other fantasy characters. In one game, for example, children “shoot” a cavity-spreading monster by moving the toothbrush around their mouth.
The app also allows parents to monitor brushing habits, including frequency, duration, and speed. To prevent overuse, the app limits play to three sessions per day.
Additionally, the Magik app guides children on proper brushing techniques, showing them where and how long to brush each area.
Kolibree is no stranger to smart oral care. In early 2017, the company launched Ara, an AI-powered toothbrush that tracked oral health and encouraged proper brushing habits.
The Magik toothbrush will be available later this year for under $30, offering the brush, mobile game, stand, and an engaging brushing experience for children.
