Dental Floss, Brushing, and Tongue Scraping: Key Steps for Healthy Teeth

A dental expert has outlined three essential steps to boost oral hygiene, improve health, and maintain a brilliant smile. Dr. Shaadi Manouchehri emphasizes that following these practices helps protect teeth and gums while preventing decay and gum disease.

The first recommendation is to use an electric toothbrush. “Brush twice a day for two minutes—before breakfast and at night,” Dr. Manouchehri advised in a TikTok clip.

She also highlighted the importance of cleaning between teeth using dental floss or a water flosser. “This is the number one place where cavities form. Brushing alone is not enough,” she explained.

Finally, Dr. Manouchehri recommended using a tongue scraper daily. “The main cause of bad breath is bacteria on the tongue. Brushing alone doesn’t remove it effectively,” she said. She advised scraping the tongue once or twice daily after brushing, then rinsing the scraper.

Brushing twice daily removes plaque and food particles, preventing gum disease, tooth decay, and tartar buildup. Flossing reaches areas a toothbrush cannot, reducing inflammation, bleeding, and infection in the gums. Using a tongue scraper removes bacteria and debris, improving breath and enhancing taste sensation.

By combining brushing, flossing, and tongue scraping, individuals can significantly improve oral health and maintain a fresher, healthier smile.
