The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees has appointed Chung How Kau, B.D.S., M.Sc.D., M.B.A., Ph.D., as the first holder of the Don Speed Endowed Professorship for Orthodontics.
The professorship honors the late Dr. Bryant G. “Don” Speed, a longtime UAB orthodontics faculty member celebrated for his mentorship and dedication to students.
Kau, professor and chair of UAB’s Department of Orthodontics since 2010, is internationally recognized for his work in craniofacial anomalies and advanced imaging.
His clinical expertise includes cleft and craniofacial care, orthognathic surgery, and customized digital appliances.
He earned his dental degree at the National University of Singapore, a master’s in orthodontics from the University of Wales, an Executive MBA from the University of Leeds, and a Ph.D. from Cardiff University.
Kau is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and has published over 450 peer-reviewed papers and presentations.
“Dr. Speed’s integrity and dedication set a standard that continues to inspire us,” Kau said. “This professorship honors his legacy while supporting our department’s mission to advance orthodontic education and research.”
Dr. Speed, who earned his dental degree from UAB in 1960, taught at UAB for 31 years and ran a private practice in Selma, Alabama. He also directed the TMJ and Facial Pain Clinic at UAB.
Kau emphasized that the professorship ensures Speed’s spirit of mentorship and service will continue to inspire future orthodontists.
