Promoting Early Dental Care: Smile SBC Encourages Healthy Habits for Young Children

Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among American children. Every February, the nation celebrates Children’s Dental Health Month.

To this end, First 5 San Bernardino has partnered with the San Bernardino County Public Health Department’s Smile SBC program to help families prioritize their children’s dental health.

This year’s “Little Teeth, Big Responsibility” event took place on January 30th at Hawthorne Elementary School in Ontario, where 48 preschoolers received free dental exams, brushing instruction, and a special visit from Porter the Otter.

This annual event serves to remind parents and caregivers that good oral care habits should be instilled starting with a baby’s first tooth or first birthday, as healthy primary teeth are the foundation for future adult dental health.

“The importance of a child’s baby teeth is often overlooked, and getting them to brush their teeth can be a challenge for every family,” said Karen Scott, Executive Director of First 5 San Bernardino.

That’s why we partner with Smile SBC every year to help families prioritize dental care from an early age.

According to data, over 60% of kindergarteners in San Bernardino County experience tooth decay. The good news is that tooth decay is completely preventable: Daily brushing, flossing, a healthy diet, and regular dental visits can all effectively protect children’s oral health.
