TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A Tennessee-based nonprofit, Remote Area Medical (RAM), brought its mobile clinic to Terre Haute this weekend, offering free dental, vision, and general medical services to those in need.
The clinic provided dental cleanings, fillings, extractions, eye exams, prescription glasses, and basic medical care. All services were offered at no cost, helping people who often lack access to affordable healthcare.
“Some people simply don’t have access to this kind of care. Many waited all day just to be seen by a dental professional,” said Brad Sands, Medical Coordinator for RAM. “It’s an honor to provide this service to people who desperately need it.”
More than 200 patients were treated over the two-day clinic, which ran Saturday and Sunday. Hundreds of volunteers from across the U.S. supported the effort, including medical professionals, students, and local community members.
RAM’s mission focuses on helping those without insurance or with limited coverage. Many of the services offered, such as dental and vision care, are not always included in basic health insurance plans.
“Not everyone has insurance that covers dental or vision,” said Emily Proctor, a nurse practitioner student and volunteer. “Here, people can get glasses or have teeth pulled the same day. It’s a big help.”
Local dentist Dr. Ben Cvengros from Crown Hill Dentistry in Clinton also volunteered. He shared the story of a young patient in pain.
“We removed a tooth from a little boy who needed a lot more dental work. He couldn’t go through it all at once, so today was about easing his pain,” Cvengros said. “He’ll need to find follow-up care, but at least we could help him now.”
In 2023, RAM served more than 36,000 people across the country. This year marks the organization’s 40th anniversary of bringing “health, hope, and humanity” to underserved communities.
