The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit (HKPR) and Peterborough Public Health (PPH), now legally merged, are urging families to take advantage of the expanding Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). This federal program aims to make dental care more affordable and accessible for eligible Canadians.
With recent changes to both the CDCP and the Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO) program, parents and guardians need to understand how these programs work together. Public health officials are available to assist families in navigating the application process with confidence.
The CDCP is a federal initiative designed to reduce the cost of dental care. Applications are open for seniors aged 65 and older, children under 18, and adults holding a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate. As of last month, the program has expanded to include all eligible adults aged 18 to 64.
“Good oral health is essential to overall well-being,” said Anna Rusak, Health Promoter with the HKPR District Health Unit. “Programs like HSO and CDCP play a vital role in ensuring dental care is accessible to qualifying children and youth. With more dental providers requiring patients to enroll in CDCP, we want families to be prepared. We are here to support them through the application process.”
What Families Need to Know About CDCP
Now open to all ages, CDCP invites families with an adjusted net income of $90,000 or less, no private dental insurance, and filed taxes to submit a single household application. The program helps cover dental costs such as regular check-ups, cleanings, and treatments that maintain healthy teeth and gums.
Qualified families will receive a package from Sun Life, the program’s administrator. This package includes a member card, program details, and the date when benefits begin. It is important to wait until this start date before scheduling any dental appointments.
Finding a Dentist Who Accepts CDCP
Families should first ask their current dental office if they accept CDCP. If they do not have a dentist, Sun Life offers an online search tool to find approved providers. Assistance is also available by calling Sun Life at 1-888-888-8110.
Before booking an appointment or starting treatment, always:
- Confirm the dentist accepts CDCP clients.
- Verify your benefit start date and understand any out-of-pocket costs.
- Ask about any fees beyond CDCP coverage and request an estimate or exact amount.
Families should never pay the full dental bill upfront, as Sun Life does not reimburse patients directly.
