Celebrity dentist Dr. Samantha “Sam” Bernardo, founder of Awesam Smile Dental Clinic, marked her birthday with an act of service, leading a large-scale dental outreach titled “Ngiti Mo, Sagot Ko” at the Iwahig Covered Court in Marikina City.
Now in its eighth year, the program provided free fluoride treatments, dental cleanings, and tooth extractions to more than 1,500 children. Families also received grocery packs containing rice and other essentials. For Dr. Bernardo, the effort was about more than numbers—it was about bringing quality dental care to communities that often go without.
“This tradition began in 2017 as a simple feeding program,” she told reporters. “It has grown into something much bigger.”
The first dentist in her family, Dr. Bernardo built her practice from the ground up. After earning her license, she began with small outreach efforts. Today, her mission has evolved into a fully mobile dental program equipped with digital tools and staffed by trained volunteers, reaching deep into underserved areas.
“This year, we focused on prevention,” she explained. “In the past, we did many extractions for adults. Now we’re working to stop cavities before they start. That means fluoride treatments, cleanings, and dental education.”
Tooth decay remains the most common dental problem among Filipino children, often worsened by gingivitis and poor oral hygiene. Dr. Bernardo stressed that many people only seek dental help when they are already in pain—sometimes when it is too late to save a tooth.
To make the outreach more engaging, she invited actress Kim Rodriguez and social media personality Boss Toyo, who helped distribute supplies and interact with families.
Awesam Smile now operates nine branches across Luzon, with further expansion planned. Dr. Bernardo remains hands-on, personally visiting clinics, mentoring young dentists, and investing in advanced equipment, including technology from UCLA.
“My vision is to offer affordable, high-quality dental care,” she said. “Even with celebrity clients coming in for veneers or whitening, our priority is ensuring that everyday families get the basic services they need.”
During the event, parents received tips on proper brushing, choosing the right toothbrush, and knowing when to seek professional care. “Dental health is tied to confidence, speech, and even sleep,” Dr. Bernardo noted. “It’s not just about a nice smile.”
From starting a home-based clinic in Cainta, Rizal, to leading a growing network of clinics and outreach programs, Dr. Bernardo remains focused on her mission. “I just want to stay grounded and keep helping more people,” she said. “This is the kind of work that makes everything worth it.”
