Smiles for Service Members: Local Veterans Receive Thousands in Free Dental Care

SAN DIEGO — More than a dozen veterans across San Diego received free dental treatment valued at over $40,000 on Saturday, thanks to a nationwide day of service.

The event was part of the 15th annual Smile Generation Serve Day, a program held at dental offices across the country. In San Diego, the effort was made possible through a partnership between Smile Generation and Hire Heroes, a nonprofit that helps veterans find job opportunities.

“We’re all here as a team, volunteering our day and our time to donate dental services to our community,” said Elena Ortiz, office manager at Downtown SD Modern Dentistry.

Smile Generation reports that more than 80% of veterans are ineligible for dental benefits. This lack of coverage often results in higher rates of gum disease, missing teeth, and related health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Dr. David Kim of SD Modern Dentistry said the free care helps bridge that gap.

“It’s nice to be able to help some of these patients who maybe couldn’t afford this treatment,” Kim said. “To make that difference without any financial burden or pressure is really special.”

Ahead of the event, nine participating dental offices conducted pre-screenings for veterans. On Aug. 16, from 8 a.m. to noon, those patients received treatments including deep cleanings, fillings, and crowns.

Organizers noted that veterans in need are also welcome to walk in for care during the week, outside of the scheduled Serve Day.
