RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Dozens of Richmond children received free dental care on Saturday, September 13, thanks to a local dentistry practice.
Stony Point Orthodontics and Children’s Dentistry offered complimentary exams and cleanings to children under 18 who do not have dental insurance. About 80 children visited the office for the services.
“This first appointment is just an exam and screening,” said Dr. Alex Lam, a pediatric dentist at the practice. “It lays the foundation for future treatment and emphasizes the importance of returning for follow-up care.”
The event was part of the national “Give Kids a Smile” program. The practice participates several times a year to support children in the community.
Dr. Richard Byrd highlighted the ongoing need for such services in the Richmond area. “Some children are 14 or 15 years old and have never seen a dentist,” he said. “We are helping an underserved community and making a real difference.”
The practice provides free dental care to roughly 400 children annually. Dr. Byrd emphasized the importance of early care. “Our goal is to share information with parents so they bring their children in early,” he said. “We want to stop the widespread problem of dental decay.”
By offering these services, Stony Point Orthodontics and Children’s Dentistry aim to improve oral health and raise awareness about the importance of regular dental visits.
