Pontefract’s Ropergate Dental Care is increasing NHS appointments for children in response to a growing incidence of tooth decay in the area. Local health data show the region has higher rates of dental decay among children than the national average, particularly affecting five-year-olds.
The practice aims to ensure that tooth decay is detected and treated early, helping children avoid the need for hospital care. Staff at Ropergate Dental Care are also promoting oral health awareness among families in the community.
Educational efforts focus on the importance of fluoride application and the Dental Check by One initiative. Established by the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Dental Officer for England, the campaign encourages parents to take their children to the dentist as soon as their teeth emerge—or by their first birthday at the latest.
Dr. James Harrison, clinical director and dentist at Ropergate Dental Care, emphasized that early dental care is critical in preventing tooth decay. “Children can avoid tooth decay by limiting sugar intake and brushing regularly with fluoride toothpaste,” he said.
“Ropergate Dental Care is committed to ensuring children have access to an NHS dentist from the moment they get their first teeth. Early detection through regular dental visits is key,” Dr. Harrison added.
