Evergreen Islamic Center Expands Free Dental Clinic and Food Assistance in San Jose

The Evergreen Islamic Center in San Jose is broadening its community impact, offering free health care, dental services, and food assistance to residents facing financial challenges.

While the center serves as a place for spiritual reflection during Ramadan and daily prayers, it has also become a vital community hub. The facility doubles as a voting location and a support site, distributing food and providing medical care for uninsured individuals.

A central feature of its outreach is the free medical and dental clinic. The program has received significant support, including $150,000 from Islamic Relief, $90,000 from the California Association of Free Clinics, and $50,000 from CVS, according to Chief Medical Officer Aifra Ahmed. The clinic operates on an annual budget of roughly $50,000 for health and dental services.

Former board president Faisal Yazadi highlighted that charity is a cornerstone of the center’s mission. The center contributes annually to disaster relief efforts, local libraries, teacher organizations, and the Second Harvest of Silicon Valley food bank.

Demand for aid has surged in recent years. Following delays in CalFresh benefits, food assistance requests spiked and remain high. Board President Saqib Hassan noted a nearly 50% increase in food support needs as inflation drives up grocery prices.

On the first Saturday of every month, cars line up around the center to collect staples such as rice, flour, sugar, and cooking oil. Additional items include pasta, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and hygiene products.

What began as support for roughly 50 families now reaches about 135 households. Over the past year, the center distributed 30,453 pounds of food, costing $46,632, according to operations team member Jawed Iqbal. The pantry operates on a modest $175 monthly budget, with most donations coming from community members.

“Food is getting expensive, especially for people who don’t have much to spare,” Iqbal said. “It gives them something they can rely on.”

Medical services are offered every Sunday by volunteer professionals, including primary care, physical therapy, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, lab work, and medication management. The clinic partners with APPNA Community Health Center to staff medical volunteers.

Since its opening in 2020, the clinic has served more than 650 patients, with services valued at around $1 million, Yazadi said. Patients are referred to specialists when needed, ensuring comprehensive care.

Physicians like Dr. Mubasher Rana note that many patients would otherwise go without care. “They’re very appreciative because it’s very hard, especially for people who don’t have insurance to navigate the system,” he said.

Dental services, introduced last year, include exams, X-rays, cleanings, preventive screenings, and referrals. Dr. Nazish Mir said these basic services help patients avoid severe dental issues that could otherwise lead them to costly emergency care.

The center also addresses emotional well-being. Imam Sami Rehman recalled counseling a man struggling in his marriage after morning prayer. “I’ve seen the direct impact of services provided here affecting both Muslim and non-Muslim residents every day,” he said.

The Evergreen Islamic Center will host its annual Grand Iftar on March 8 from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at 2486 Ruby Ave., San Jose, continuing its tradition of combining spiritual support with community care.
