LightSpun and Smile America Partners announce partnership to accelerate dental provider enrolment to expand care for 500,000 underserved kids

LightSpun, an AI-powered dental insurance administration platform supporting more than 175,000 providers nationwide, has announced a partnership with Smile America Partners, the largest school-based dental programme in the US, which serves 500,000 underserved children across more than 8,000 schools each year.

Dental care remains one of the most significant unmet health needs among children in the US, particularly in low-income and rural communities where cost and access present substantial barriers. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, pupils lose more than 34 million school hours annually due to urgent or unplanned dental treatment.

Smile America Partners operates the country’s largest school-based mobile and portable dental programme, delivering preventive care, screenings and treatment directly on school premises. By providing care where children learn, the programme helps prevent emergencies without requiring pupils to miss a day of school.

However, expanding services to additional underserved communities is often delayed by administrative processes. Enrolling a new provider with insurers can take between 45 and 60 days, meaning that entire academic terms may pass before a qualified dentist is able to treat a single child. LightSpun’s AI-driven platform automates the enrolment process, reducing turnaround times while ensuring applications are accurate and compliant before submission.

Through LightSpun’s partnership with the American Dental Association, Smile America Partners will benefit from standardised, AI-enabled credentialling designed to accelerate provider enrolment while maintaining high quality standards.

“Credentialling compliance directly affects when children can receive care,” said Steve Higginbotham, chief executive officer of Smile America Partners. “LightSpun’s platform enables our team to submit accurate applications that meet insurers’ requirements first time, helping providers gain approval more quickly and allowing us to expand into new communities while maintaining compliance.”

The partnership comes at a time of increasing pressure to modernise dental administration. The 2025 CAQH Index identified $21bn in potential savings if manual workflows were eliminated, while new state legislation requires dental insurers to allocate at least 83% of premium income to patient care rather than overheads.

“Smile America is addressing a critical access challenge for underserved children, yet expansion into new schools and communities is often slowed by back-office credentialling timelines,” said Shaju Puthussery, chief executive officer and co-founder of LightSpun. “By automating this process, provider onboarding can be completed in weeks rather than months, ensuring a greater proportion of funding is directed towards treatment rather than administrative rework.”
