Alberta Dentists Urge Residents to Stick to Simple Oral Health Habits That Protect Against Oral Cancer and Improve Overall Wellness

This Oral Health Month, Alberta dentists are reminding residents that maintaining good oral health doesn’t require complicated routines — simple, proven habits remain the most effective tools for protecting both oral and overall health.

Dental professionals across the province are encouraging Albertans to focus on four fundamental practices: brushing twice a day, flossing daily, eating a balanced diet, and visiting a dentist regularly. Amid the surge of online wellness trends and quick-fix solutions, dentists emphasize that these basic practices provide long-term benefits at every stage of life.

“Oral health doesn’t have to be complicated,” said Dr. Carol Martin, a practicing dentist in Grande Prairie and President of the Alberta Dental Association. “While trends and quick fixes continue to circulate online, evidence-based care remains the best approach to protecting long-term health. Your dentist and the entire oral health care team are here to support you.”

Dentists are also highlighting the link between human papillomavirus (HPV) and oral cancer, a connection still not widely known. A recent survey of 1,003 Albertans found that fewer than 40% were aware of the risk HPV poses to oral health. Experts encourage patients to discuss oral cancer screening and prevention measures with their dental providers.

“Your mouth says a lot about your health, and it is important to listen to it,” Dr. Martin said. “Early detection can greatly improve your chance of surviving oral cancer. Whether it’s understanding your risk, getting screened, or talking to your provider about HPV, taking that first step at your next dental visit could make a real difference.”

From rural towns to large urban centres, Alberta’s dental teams are committed to helping families make informed choices that support lifelong oral health. To engage children in building healthy habits early, the Alberta Dental Association is hosting a colouring contest for children aged 3 to 12, encouraging families to talk about brushing, flossing, and making healthy dietary choices together.

Tips for Maintaining Healthy Teeth and Gums

  1. Brush thoroughly: Ensure all 192 tooth surfaces are cleaned; ask your dentist for a “disclosing solution” to check coverage.
  2. Reduce sugary drinks: Choose water to rinse away harmful bacteria and acids. Fluoridated water also protects against cavities.
  3. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush: Replace every three months to prevent enamel and gum damage.
  4. Choose fluoride toothpaste: Fluoride prevents cavities effectively.
  5. Floss daily: Prevents tartar and plaque buildup that cause oral health problems.
  6. Eat a balanced diet: Cheese, nuts, fruits, and vegetables help maintain strong teeth and gums.
  7. Avoid tobacco, vaping, and cannabis: These increase risks of oral cancer, stained teeth, and other serious health issues.
